Baby Catchin’

As I had mentioned in previous posts about Hospital Antonio Lorena and the “Maternity Ward,” I have been working on the obstetrical service lately, and so far it has been an awesome experience.  It is a busy service with many pregnant patients coming in from Cuzco, as well as the surrounding area.  I work alongside some of the medical interns, as well as the “obstetras,” who are very similar to the midwife profession that we have in the states.  At about 3 weeks into the service now, they are already letting me deliver babies on my own, which truly has been an amazing experience (see below).

Me with some of the “obstetras” organizing our equipment while we wait for the patient’s next contraction.

Getting ready for the patient to push.

The head is starting to come while I try to protect the perineum from any tears.

The baby finally comes out, a healthy baby boy!

 Cutting the placental cord…

Showing a new healthy baby boy to the proud mom.

Examining and measuring the placenta, making sure there aren’t any abnormalities or missing pieces.

After all is done, time to clean up.

Proudly holding one of my very first deliveries.

This is a giant book where every patient delivery is recorded with data about the patient and the newborn.

Here you can see all the information that is included.

Including my name which officially made it in the “big book!”
