We are Godparents (Padrinos)

On November 19th, Richie celebrated his first communion and asked Kenzo and me to be his godparents.  We were honored and a little taken aback, since we have only really known him for the last couple of months.  But, he really wanted us to accept the honor, so we did.

Here (and I am assuming in Catholic churches in general, but someone can correct me if I am wrong), individuals have a set of godparents for their baptism and another set for their first communion.  To be able to take communion, the kids must go through confirmation and confession – testifying to their belief in Jesus and asking for his forgiveness for their sins.

The ceremony of the first communion was beautiful – and a big deal.  All families of the boys (Richie attends Salicianos, an all boys school) were there to celebrate and watch as they took communion for the first time.  After they took it, other Catholic believers who had confessed their faith were invited to participate.

Kenzo, Janie, Richie, Lisette (mom) and Ricardo (dad). (PS. Peruvians do not really smile in photos, we’re working on them though!)

While we waited for Richie (who had a reception with the other kids) we took advantage of our time for photos . . .

(Left to right – Ricardo (dad), Ramiro (grandfather-paternal), Jesus (cousin), Pierro (cousin) and Kenzo (godfather)
Lisette (mom), Dafne (sister), Janie (me – godmother), Luz (grandmother – maternal)
Richie’s cousin Pierro – such a cute kid.
Jesusito – going to be trouble with the ladies one day – cutie and sweetie!

Kenzo tried to make Dafne smile and ended up making her laugh.
