Lab Tests

So, this blog has been somewhat slacking in posts lately, and for that there are two reasons.  The first, is that recently Janie’s computer had to be repaired in the states, and so she won’t be able to get it until we visit in the beginning of November.  Therefore, we are sharing one computer, which means she is using it 90% of the time to do her photography.

The second reason, which has given me something to blog about is that I was sick for the past week or so.  Actually, getting sick at least once while in Peru was inevitable, so I wasn’t all that surprised when it came.  I had some fevers and chills for a few days, along with some abdominal pain and loose bowels.  Overall, I didn’t feel great, but didn’t quite feel the need to go to the doctor or a clinic.  That was, until I found out that another American housemate who had also been sick recently, tested positive for amoebiasis (a nasty parasite!).  At that point, I decided I should at least get a stool test to check for parasites.  As such, I thought I would also take the opportunity to tell a little about what laboratory tests are typically available here in Cusco, Peru.

A couple things to note….the most common lab tests ordered are usually stool samples for parasitology, and urinalysis for urinary tract infections.  Interestingly, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is a very common test ordered in outpatient clinics in the U.S., is not available in all of Cusco–in fact, the only way to order one is to send the sample to Lima, the capital.  Thus, TSH is rarely ordered.

An example of a typical lab slip at the Belen Clinic....you need to check-off the labs that you want to order.

View of the laboratory located in the basement of the Belen Clinic.

"Samples" all lined up being prepared for different types of analysis.

Example of a parasitology poster in the lab to help with identification of common parasites.

Example of staining used before counting the number of blood cells under the microscope.

Example of typical lab results (which actually is mine). This example shows that I did not have any evidence of parasites, but I did have some inflammatory changes, most likely a gastrointestinal bacterial infection. Lucky for me I dodged amoebiasis!
